Amy von Heyking

Amy von Heyking has been teaching in the Department of Elementary Education at the University of Alberta since 2002. She is interested in the development of children’s historical understanding and the nature of history teaching, especially the use of fiction and nonfiction texts. Drawing on these interests, she developed an integrated language arts/social studies program, Social Studies Through Literature, which is used in elementary classrooms across the country. She is also the author of both volumes of Teaching with Dear Canada. She taught social studies in Medicine Hat and Red Deer, and she holds a PhD from the University of Calgary.
