Using Digital Technologies: Capturing Student Voice

This support material is incorporated into critical challenges at grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12; however, it can be adapted for use at all grade levels.

Note: Access to a plug-in or built-in microphone and speakers or headphones is required.

Capturing student voice through tools such as voice-embedded Word documents, digital presentations, VoiceThreads, Podcasts and Webcasts provides evidence of student learning as they make connections and record their thinking. For example, students might record inferences regarding evidence identified within a video.

Using a computer operating system
To use this technology:

  • follow the directions in the Help file of the sound program
  • record voice and save
  • embed sound files into documents or digital presentations such as Microsoft PowerPoint.

Alternatively, students can use an external digital recording device to record and upload the audio file into a document.

Using online tools
Various online (Web 2.0) tools allow audio commentary to be inserted into images, documents and streamed videos.

To use this technology:

  • select appropriate images, documents or video
  • follow directions on Web site to add commentary, such as comments, questions or reflections
  • record, share and/or save.
