Modelling the Tools HeaderWhat's this?

Assessing Web Site Credibility

This modelling the tools is incorporated into critical challenges at grades 6, 10, 11 and 12, however, it can be adapted for use at all grade levels.

Session Two

Debrief the activity.

  • After students have evaluated their Web sites, invite them to present their findings to the class. Encourage students to appreciate that careful examination of the details of a bogus site is needed if errors are to be detected. Arrange for students to discuss the following questions in writing, in pairs or in a whole class discussion:
    • When did you discover the bogus Web site?
    • What was your reaction?
    • What have you learned about using the Internet from this activity?
    • Will this activity change the way you will do research in the future?

Provide formative feedback.
See the section Assessment for Learning (Formative) below for directions on use of the Rubric for Evaluating Web Site Credibility.

Option: Extend to research project.

If students are about to research a topic, ask them to assess at least four Web sites. Direct students to use at least four credible Web sites as sources for their research or inquiry project
