Webbing Ideas

This support material is incorporated into critical challenges at grades 4, 6 and 12, however, it can be adapted for use at all grade levels.

The following documents can be adapted and re-saved for your needs.

Classifying Information Word
This web can be used to record main ideas and supporting details that students have gathered from their research. To use this web, students:

  • make notes related to a topic or theme (with younger students, it may be best if their notes are recorded in phrases of no more than four words in length on small strips of paper)
  • cut out and sort the notes, either according to agreed-upon common attributes or according to categories that students, individually or in groups, choose and label
  • resort their information, as many times as necessary, until they have clear categories that allow them to group all of their information under main ideas
  • write the main ideas in the appropriate spaces on an enlarged copy of the web and paste or record their notes under the appropriate categories.

Assessing Main Ideas and Supporting Details Word
An assessment rubric is available for this web.
